The drivers of migration in a 'plastic migrant'

Migration is a behavioural strategy used by many species to cope with seasonal environments. Whether, when, and where to migrate are crucial decisions individuals have to make. How do they make these decisions?

Using European blackbirds, we are trying to answer these questions using state-of-the-art tracking technologies with both wild and aviary-bred individuals.

Specifically, I am focusing on:
  • Individual consistency and population-wide migratory strategies using a 17-year longitudinal dataset of a partially migratory population
  • To what extent migration is intrinsically programmed by using experimental approaches, including translocations of adult birds and releases of aviary-bred juveniles all across Europe.

During my first post-doc, I am joining the highly collaborative blackbird project is led by Dr. Jesko Partecke at the Max-Planck Institute for Animal Behaviour. Read more on this exciting project here.
